Equine Insurance - Reynolds Cowles, Steve Reed

Join your colleagues as well as representatives from the equine insurance industry to discuss the variety of issues surrounding equine insurance as it pertains to equine practice.  The main topics of discussion will be as follows:

  • AAEP guidelines for euthanasia: Pressure on veterinarians to determine if a horse with a neurologic condition / lack of performance / behavioral issue is a candidate for euthanasia.  Pressure on veterinarians to euthanize a horse so insurance can be collected.  Policy wording surrounding Wobbler Syndrome.  Mortality claims pursued, and other treatment options are not considered.
  • Pre-purchase examinations:  Insurance exams vs. PPE’s- should radiographs be revealed?  Should a PPE be required by insurance carriers before issuing a policy?  How should radiographic findings from a PPE be interpreted by an underwriter in absence of clinical symptoms?
  • Notice:  Urging horse owners to contact the insurance company when procedures are done with possible exclusion placement at renewal.  “Immediate notice” / coverage issues / Can veterinarians assist with advising clients to contact their insurance company in order to prevent coverage disputes involving late (or no) notice?
